Nvidia Makes $367m Move for Mobile Specialist Icera


Nvidia has made a move to acquire mobile chip company Icera. The potential deal is said to be worth $367 million and would include a substantial 550 mobile related patents.

Nvidia has made a move to acquire mobile chip company Icera. The potential deal is said to be worth $367 million and would include a substantial 550 mobile related patents. Confirmation of the deal is expected to be released very shortly.

Icera, based in Bristol UK, specializes in producing chips for mobile devices to allow them to connect to wireless networks and services. Nvidia is excited about the prospect of integrating the mobile chips with its own Tegra smartphone processor line.

Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO and President of Nvidia, stated “This is a key step in Nvidia's plans to be a major player in the mobile computing revolution”. He also added that “Adding Icera's technology to Tegra gives us an outstanding platform to support the industry's best phones and tablets”.

Analysts believe that by attaining Icera’s patents, Nvidia will be able to close the gap on market leader Qualcomm.
